In Word 2007:

1. Click at the top of the first page you want numbered.

2. Click the Page Layout tab on the Ribbon.

3. Click the Breaks icon in the Page Setup group.

4. Insert a Next Page type section break.

5. Click on the Insert tab on the Ribbon.

6. Click the Header icon and select Edit Header.

7. Deselect Link To Previous in the Design tab that appeared on the Ribbon.

8. Go back to the Insert tab and repeat Steps 5 to 7 for the Footer.

9. If there's a page number in the header or footer for the first section, delete it.

10. Go into the second section.

11. On the Design tab again, click the Page Number icon

12. Click Format Page Numbers.

13. If you want the first section’s page numbers to count but not show, click Continuous.

14. Or, if you want the page numbering to start at one, click Start At. A 1 should show up in the list box adjacent to it.

15. Click OK.

16. Click OK to actually insert the page number.

    it's long and unclear…

It's not unclear, and it's hardly the author's fault the instructions are long, to the best of my knowledge they weren't responsible for designing Word 2007.

Been looking for about a month now on how to do this, no luck! Few other "reputable" sites did not explain it correctly and I'm using 2010!  Your's worked, it put it at the Header but I don't care, it started it off correctly and on the page I wanted, THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP!!

    Dear friends
    Simple method:
    Detach and attach rule
    Detach
just detach the word pages with cntrl + x and  paste (ctrl +v) in file 1.
the file 1 doesnot show ur page number ,,if it shows..just use click on page number and use delete option.
file 2 is orginal let us say  where software automatically picks to page number counts from 1,
    Attach
just combine the file 1 and file 2 with combine pdf  an send to ur supervisor  which is most standard way in document work
    else
use pdf to word converter u again get good reults but you need to have softwares pdf to word converter which is also free but download it from website.
every thing is simple option, it takes less time.
    Process 2
detach, groupup and header and fooder ,,but its tough to explain in single page
